The social media app was suspended in Turkey on Friday (02.08.24) after authorities accused the site of both censorship and failing to remove posts they deemed offensive.
Representatives from Instagram, which is owned by Meta, will meet with Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu on Monday (05.08.24).
The minister wrote on X: “We will meet them this afternoon. We hope they will do what’s necessary to respond to our demands. We’re hoping for positive developments.”
He didn’t give specific details, but said access to the platform had been blocked due to “content-related offences”.
He added: “Last week there was a meeting with representatives of the platform, in which we set out our views on respect for Turkish laws.”
An estimated 50-60 million residents of Turkey – which has a population of 85 million – are Instagram subscribers.
Turkish authorities have previously temporarily blocked access to various other sites, including Facebook, X, and the website Wikipedia.
The video-sharing platform YouTube was also blocked in the country from 2007 to 2010.
