A BBC spokesperson have urged Apple to fix a problem with its AI-produced news summaries.
An AI-produced news summary from Apple has been criticised by the BBC.
A recent story claimed that darts player Luke Littler had won the PDC World Championship before he’d even played in the final, and was seen by users of the BBC News app.
A BBC spokesperson said in a statement: “It is essential that Apple fixes this problem urgently – as this has happened multiple times.
“As the most trusted news media organisation in the world, it is crucial that audiences can trust any information or journalism published in our name and that includes notifications.”
The broadcaster has previously complained to Apple about its Apple Intelligence feature, which was launched in the UK in December.
At present, the feature is only available on certain iPhones, as well as some iPads and Macs.
Meanwhile, in December, a major journalism body encouraged Apple to scrap Apple Intelligence.
The feature relies on AI technology to summarise and group together notifications – but it’s already been widely criticised for publishing misleading headlines.
Reporters Without Borders told the BBC that “generative AI services are still too immature to produce reliable information for the public”.
Vincent Berthier, the head of Reporters Without Borders’ technology and journalism desk, said: “AIs are probability machines, and facts can’t be decided by a roll of the dice.
“Reporters Without Borders calls on Apple to act responsibly by removing this feature. The automated production of false information attributed to a media outlet is a blow to the outlet’s credibility and a danger to the public’s right to reliable information on current affairs.”
