Dame Joanna Lumley “doesn’t care” what she looks like anymore.
The 78-year-old actress started her career as a model in the 1960s before finding further success on screen and while she used to be “insecure” about her appearance in her younger days, she has realised that vanity is just a “waste of time” now.
She told MyWeekly magazine: “I have no vanity. I don’t care what I look like. I don’t care if I’m fat or thin, I don’t care what people think of me. W hen I was younger, I had insecurities about how I looked, but the didn’t last. I realised that vanity is a waste of time and energy!”
The ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ star doesn’t go to any extreme lengths for her skincare either, and has never had a glam squad around her to do her hair.
She said: “I don’t do anything special. I use Astral cream on my face. I’ve always done my own hair.
“It’s partly because I kind of can do it. I was a model in the Sixties – we had to do our own hair then, we had to sort it, do it, put on wigs, cut it, change it, dye it . . . so I got used to it. I just go down to the supermarket and buy stuff off the shelves and stick it on.”
The former ‘New Avengers’ actress claimed that she is “not beautiful” and in fact looks “bloody awful” unless she has been fully made up.
She added: “I can look beautiful. I can put beauty on. But when I’m tired, I look bloody awful. I look after myself.
“I don’t go to the gym but I do stuff with vigour, such as housework, gardening and going up the stairs two at a time.
“I’m a vegetarian and have been for years, which helps, but I don’t gorge myself. If I ate every cake and bun I wanted, I’d have to be dragged about in a cart.”
But ultimately, the screen legend believes that beauty can only truly be defined when a woman has decided to be “unapologetically herself” to the world.
She said: “Looks apart, there’s nothing more beautiful than a woman being unapologetically herself. The key to beauty is simple – be who you are. People often talk about outer beauty, but the truth is that being truly beautiful comes from having a good heart and a kind spirit.
“It’s wonderful to feel beautiful, but it’s even more important to feel like you’re contributing something meaningful to the world.”
