Jonathan Van Ness “feels so pretty” in full-body underwear.
The ‘Queer Eye’ star found it life-changing when he discovered shape-smoothing Spanx and now he “looks for excuses” to wear them as often as he can because the garments make him feel good.
Asked what he would choose if he had to wear one thing for the rest of his life, he told Sunday Times Style magazine: “Either a sweatshirt dress or full-body Spanx undergarments.
“I didn’t really know they were a thing until I realised I’d been showing underwear lines whenever I wore dresses for the past four years.
“I now look for excuses to wear full-body Spanx every day because they make me feel so pretty.”
The 37-year-old grooming expert is also a big fan of a designer dressing gown.
He said: “I’m like that old man in the neighbourhood who takes out the trash in a bathrobe with his coffee. I don’t have fugly bathrobes, though — Missoni, Bottega, Versace.”
When he is feeling unwell, Jonathan has a favourite comfort item he always turns to.
He said: “I have a lot of sweatshirts that are meaningful to me. There’s a Wyoming Tourism one my dad gave me when I was 18 or 19. It feels like a blanket. It’s my ‘sick sweatshirt’.”
And the ‘Getting Curious’ host also own garments he won’t wear but still can’t bring himself to get rid of.
He admitted: “[I have] a Bottega dress that has a chain around the neck that is, like, five sizes too small, but I impulse bought it and I’m not going to get rid of it. Also, probably, I will never fit into it.”
Although he is known for his unique sense of style, Jonathan admitted it took him some time to find his look because he was so concerned about what other people thought.
Asked the style advice he would give his 21year-old self, he said: “Wear what the f*** you want! Seriously, I was so worried about what other people thought, so worried about the male gaze and about being masculine enough. I just wish I could have been true to myself much faster.”
