Perplexity has rolled out an artificial intelligence assistant on Android.
The free AI-powered answer engine, which launched in August 2022, can now respond to general questions, as well as perform day-to-day tasks, such as writing emails and setting reminders through Perplexity Assistant.
Its multimodal ability allows users to ask questions about what is being shown on the device’s screen, as well as via scanning items with the phone’s camera.
An example posted on the social media platform X by Perplexity saw the book ‘Thinking Fast and Slow’ by Daniel Kahneman be scanned by the software, followed by the user’s question: “Just finished reading this, what should I read next?”
However, according to The Verge, the feature – which can be accessed via the Perplexity app before users are prompted to replace it with the phone’s default AI assistant – does not work on Slack or Reddit.
A member of the publication’s team claims they could not use it to leave a comment on a YouTube video.
The software is not yet available on the Apple iPhone.
Perplexity’s X announcement read: “Introducing Perplexity Assistant.
“Assistant uses reasoning, search, and apps to help with daily tasks ranging from simple questions to multi-app actions. You can book dinner, find a forgotten song, call a ride, draft emails, set reminders, and more …
“Perplexity Assistant browses the web to complete tasks for you. For example, if you want to be reminded of a public event, it will find the correct time and date and set an intelligent reminder.
“It also maintains context from one action to another — if you’re researching restaurants in your area and want to reserve a table, choose an option and the Assistant will help book it.
“Assistant is multimodal, so you can tell it to turn on the camera and ask about what you see in front of you, or on your screen …
“Available on Play Store.
