Sony sunsetting production of Blu-ray discs from February 2025

Sony is ending production of its Blu-ray Disc format after almost 19 years.

Sony is discontinuing the Blu-ray Disc from February.

The Japanese tech giant has confirmed it will not be making Blu-ray Disc media, recording MiniDiscs, MD data for recording, and MiniDV cassettes from next month.

In a roughly translated statement, Sony said: “Thank you very much for your continued support of Sony products.

“As of February 2025, we will discontinue production of all Blu-ray Disc media, recording MiniDiscs, MD data for recording, and MiniDV cassettes. There is no successor model.

“We would like to express our sincere gratitude to our many customers who have used our service so far.”

The Blu-ray Disc was first launched in 2006 as a more superior version of the DVD, with high-definition video resolutions (1080p) and ultra high-definition video resolutions (4K).

Physical formats have been dwindling due to video-on-demand streaming being the preferred entertainment viewing method.
