Vodafone hosts Phish ‘N’ Tips shop to help keep kids safe online from scams

Vodafone hosted a ‘Phish ‘N’ Tips’ shop in London yesterday (20.02.25) to offer advice to children and parents as to how to stay safe online and spot scams – all over a plate of fish and chips.

Vodafone has hosted a ‘Phish ‘N’ Tips’ shop in London to help children stay safe online.

The event offered parents and children tips and advice on how to spot scams and stay safe as they surfed the web, all over a plate of fish and chips.

The ‘Phish ‘N’ Tips’ shop aimed to help address the online danger children face by bringing together representatives from the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC), online harm expert and psychotherapist Catherine Knibbs, and experts from Vodafone to talk to families about online safety.

A study conducted by Vodafone – which analysed the experiences of 2,000 parents and children aged 11-16, as well as over 4,800 teachers – revealed that 81 per cent of parents think scams have real-life, long-lasting consequences, noting their children’s behaviour was more likely to change for the worse after being scammed, with symptoms including increased anxiety, depression and mood swings.

A further 60 per cent of young people said they didn’t know where to turn to for assistance after falling victim to a scam, with the concern reflected by 40 per cent of parents.

Catherine Knibbs said: “Vodafone’s study found that 60 per cent of young people don’t know where to turn for help, which can result in the emotional turmoil of shame, ridicule and, in some cases, mental health problems like anxiety and depression.

“I’m proud to team up with Vodafone in their bid to make the internet safer by design and offer parents and kids tips and guidance around staying safe online.”

Those at the event were able to speak with Vodafone’s expert team about ways to keep their devices secure, learn about parental controls on their children’s handsets and explore Vodafone’s Secure Net – an all-in-one digital security service.

The platform helps shield devices from fraud, viruses, and identity theft, while offering customisable filters to ensure that only age-appropriate content is accessible while browsing the internet.

The event was also attended by the likes of comedian Axel Blake, who won ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ in 2022, to chat with Knibbs about the types of scams his 16-year-old son should look out for when gaming online, and content creator Susie Verrill, who spoke with NSPCC specialists about how she could navigate the online safety conversations as her three young children grow up.
