The ‘Just Mercy’ actor stars alongside Jack Black and Jason Momoa as well as Emma Myers and Danielle Brooks in the new movie based on the video game series and was very impressed by how everything was achieved on set.
He told ScreenRant: “There [were] certain times where we didn’t know what was behind the green screen.
“They had some cool fight stuff in it, Emma and Danielle, which I thought was amazing. The village is all practical.”
Meanwhile, Danielle – who is known for appearing in ‘Peacemaker’ – plays Dawn in the movie, and worked with director Jared Hess on a backstory for her character.
In the joint interview, she explained: “[We were] just creating it as we went along, who Dawn was. At one point she sold oils–different types of scents and stuff. We let that go, but I love the fact that Jared had this wonderful idea of her having a zoo mobile. I was just like, ‘Yes, yes, and more yes, please..
“It paints a picture of who she is, she is caring, and she does have a passion for animals and things that are different. I really liked that.”
Ultimately, director Hess believed that everyone involved had a “personal relationship” to the game on which the film is based, and wanted to make sure that those passions came across on screen.
He said: “We all had such a personal relationship to the game.it was like, ‘Gosh, let’s be kids and let’s just celebrate what we love about the game, but take audiences on this epic comedy adventure.’ It was like everybody injecting what they love about the game and trying to realize it in a new way.”
‘School of Rock’ star Black previously insisted that this kind of movie is just what the world “needs” at this point in time.
He told The Hollywood Reporter: “What the world needs now is love, sweet love. We’ve got to work together, my God.
“There’s so much violence and war and hatred. And that’s what I love about this movie – there’s a lot of love in it and there’s a lot of creativity.
“There is some anger and violence too, but in the end it’s about friendship and working together to make [the world] a better place.”
