Emilio Estevez “passed out” after meeting his ‘The Breakfast Club’ co-stars for the first time because he was on “pain pills”.

The 62-year-old actor – who played Andrew Clark alongside Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Anthony Michael Hall and Molly Ringwald in the 1985 John Hughes film – had four wisdom teeth pulled out “the night before” a script read-through but attempted to battle through the pain.

He explained at the ‘Don’t You Forget About Me: The Breakfast Club 40th Anniversary Reunion’ at the C2E2 pop culture convention in Chicago on April 12: “The first time that we all got together, [writer-direct John Hughes] had organized a read-through of the script at a hotel in Century City.

“I had, the night before, just had all four wisdom teeth pulled — impacted wisdom teeth. I was on pain pills, and my agent called and said, ‘Listen, they’re going to do the read-through, and you have to show up.’ I said, ‘Look, my face is swollen, I’m on pain pills, I’m bleeding out!’ They said, ‘No, no, no, it’s important. You have to be there.’

“They sent a car for me because I obviously couldn’t drive.

“At the end of the read-through, John says, ‘Hey listen, I brought the first cut of my movie ‘Sixteen Candles’ … I want to show it to you.’

“And we said, ‘Okay great.’

“He puts the film on, we’re sitting there, I don’t think I made it through the opening credits.

“I passed out from the pain pills, and just from the ordeal of having my teeth extracted.”

The ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’ star woke up during the end credits and feared he was getting the sack.

He added: “I woke up at the end credits, and I looked at Judd, and Judd says, ‘I think you’re getting fired.’ And I believed it too.

“[He recalled]: ‘Oh gosh, I just failed the final test.'”

The event marked the first time in years that Emilio had reunited with his fellow cast members – of whom have used a cardboard cut out of him at past reunions – but now as the film is celebrating 40 years, he felt the time was right.

He said: “This one felt special, it’s here in Chicago where we made the film. It’s obviously the 40th anniversary, and it just felt like it was time.

“Somebody told me that Molly said, ‘Well, does Emilio just not like us?’ And that broke my heart. And I went, ‘No of course I love all of them.’

“And that just made sense, so here I am.”
