The world’s first car to drive upside down has been unveiled, and it has broken a world record.

This McMurtry Spéirling is able to drive upside down using a powerful fan system, which allows it to “suck” itself to a surface.

Showcased at McMurtry Automotive’s headquarters in Gloucestershire by co-founder Thomas Yates, the motor is just one of 100 models that will be produced by 2026.

The car is a single-seater electric vehicle, weighs under 1,000kg but creates more than 1000bhp in down force.

It can reach a speed of 100 miles per hour in 2.66 seconds and it also broke Top Gear’s 20-year lap record as the Stig completed the 1.75-mile (2.8km) figure of eight circuit at Dunsfold Aerodrome in 55.9 seconds, beating the previous record by 3.1 seconds.

Thomas Yates told Interesting Engineering: “With a longer inverted track or a suitable tunnel, we may be able to drive even further.”
