Google and Samsung have collaborated to create an Android desktop mode.
The American tech titan’s engineering manager, Florina Muntenescu, confirmed during Google I/O’s developer keynote meeting that it and the South Korean electronics firm are “building on the foundation” of Samsung DeX to “bring enhanced desktop windowing capabilities” in Android 16.
Samsung Dex, which was launched in 2017, allows customers who have high-end handheld devices to “extend their device into a desktop-like experience by connecting a keyboard, mouse, and monitor”.
During the keynote on May 20, the layout had app icons placed in the middle of the taskbar, which is located at the bottom of the screen.
And Google demonstrated how the app icons can be moved around.
Users can check to see what the time is by looking at the top left corner of the screen, as well as the quality of the Wi-Fi signal and the battery status on the right.
Florina Muntenescu, Google engineering manager, said in the conference: “We’ve been collaborating with Samsung, building on the foundation of Samsung DeX, to bring enhanced desktop windowing capabilities in Android 16 for more powerful productivity workflows.”
