PlayStation not planning to offer day-one first party games to PS Plus subscribers

Sony is not planning to offer new first party games to PlayStation Plus subscribers on their lainch day, and is instead intending to add them to the subscription service when they’re “12-18 months older”.

Sony has confirmed it won’t offer PlayStation Plus subscribers new first party games on launch day.

In a new interview with Game File, PlayStation VP of Global Services Nick Maguire said the company “isn’t looking to put games in day and date” on PS Plus, reiterating that first‑party titles won’t be available to subscribers upon release.

He told the outlet: “We’ve sort of stayed true to our strategy across the board, where we’re not looking to put games in day and date.

“Our strategy of bringing games in when they’re 12, 18 months old or older … that balance for us is working really well across the platform.”

Maguire added that PlayStation plans to continue adding four to five indie titles each year – and only include first‑party games once they are over a year old.

As for PS Plus itself, Maguire said it has “proven itself to be a great way to introduce players to franchises”, like as God of War.

He continued: “So I think there’s always going to be a moment for any game where there’s the right time for it to go into Plus, when it’s ready to reach a wider audience or … to find new fans or new parts of our platform that it hasn’t already reached.”

Sony has long resisted matching Xbox Game Pass’s day‑one first‑party releases.

In 2022, CEO Jim Ryan said doing so would break PlayStation’s “virtuous cycle” by undermining sales and future investment in its studios.

VGC later confirmed in 2023 that the approach was “working” and remains the company’s strategy moving forward.

By contrast, Xbox Game Pass continues to attract praise for delivering games from Xbox Game Studios at launch, such as Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.
