OpenAI, Microsoft, and Anthropic are funding a nationwide AI Academy for teachers in the U.S.
The three tech companies have joined together for the initiative with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), aiming to equip teachers with the skills to responsibly integrate artificial intelligence into classrooms.
The programme – announced in partnership with the AFT – responds to growing demand for AI literacy in education.
AFT President Randi Weingarten said in a statement: “Teachers need time, hands-on learning and support to understand these emerging AI tools, including the risks and the rewards.”
The pilot programme promises online and in-person training modules covering AI fundamentals, ethical considerations, and lesson planning that leverages AI tools.
The Academy – scheduled to launch in the 2025–26 school year – is backed by an initial $100 million commitment across the three companies.
The funding will support curriculum development, educator stipends, and ongoing evaluations.
Microsoft chief Phil Spencer said: “Our aim is to democratize AI education – for teachers, by teachers, so it can have a positive impact in every classroom.”
Anthropic’s co-founder and CEO, Dario Amodei, added: “Educators are on the frontlines of shaping how AI is used. This partnership is critical to help them be prepared.”
Pilots in diverse U.S. districts will begin this autumn, with results expected to guide a broader rollout in the following year, and potentially extending internationally.
Under evaluation criteria, success will be measured via teacher confidence, classroom integration, and student outcomes.
