Apple exec Craig Federighi vows Siri will get ‘much bigger upgrade than we envisoned

Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, Craig Federighi, has promised that Siri’s upcoming overhaul will surpass initial expectations and deliver far greater improvements than previously envisioned.

Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, Craig Federighi, has promised that Siri’s upcoming overhaul will be a “much bigger upgrade than we envisoned”.

During a rare all-hands meeting at Apple’s Cupertino headquarters, Federighi explained the company’s decision to scrap an earlier hybrid approach for Siri – which combined Apple’s legacy voice assistant logic with new generative AI tools.

Instead, Apple is now building Siri on a completely new end-to-end architecture.

As reported by Bloomberg, Federighi said: “This has put us in a position to not just deliver what we announced, but to deliver a much bigger upgrade than we envisioned.

“There is no project people are taking more seriously.”

He credited leadership changes, specifically assigning Vision Pro creator Mike Rockwell and his headset software team to spearhead the revamp, as a driving force behind Siri’s accelerated development.

Their involvement, Federighi asserted, has “supercharged” progress on AI-driven voice features.

The comments came amid broader remarks at the session by CEO Tim Cook, who rallied teams around the need for Apple to embrace artificial intelligence proactively.

Cook emphasised that AI is “as big or bigger” than the iPhone and the internet, a domain that Apple must “grab.”

He reaffirmed the company’s intent by stating: “Apple must do this. Apple will do this. This is sort of ours to grab.”

Despite Apple’s late entry into the AI arena, Federighi and Cook are optimistic about the direction and capability of upcoming updates.

The revamped Siri, expected to roll out in early 2026, is designed to deliver broader context understanding, improved proactive suggestions, and more natural conversational engagement powered by Apple’s custom AI infrastructure.
