Mo Gawdat, the former chief business officer at Google X, has issued a stark warning about the future of work, declaring that the idea artificial intelligence will create new jobs is “100 per cent crap”.
The idea that artificial intelligence will create new jobs is “100 per cent crap”, ex-Google executive Mo Gawdat has said.
Speaking on the Diary of a CEO podcast, the former chief business officer at Google X dismissed the popular narrative that AI will open up new employment opportunities to offset job losses caused by automation.
He said: “The idea that AI will create new jobs is 100 per cent crap.
“We’ve never seen a technology that disrupted white-collar work as deeply as this one.”
Gawdat, who helped lead projects at Google’s moonshot innovation lab, said the consequences of AI will be far-reaching – even for the most senior roles.
He warned: “There is no job that’s safe. Not even a CEO’s job is safe.”
He argued that society needs to rethink its relationship with work entirely, especially in light of rapid AI developments.
He said: “We were never made to wake up every morning and just occupy 20 hours of our day with work. We’re not made for that.
“We defined our purpose as work. That’s a capitalist lie.”
The comments reflect growing concern that generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini will increasingly take over tasks traditionally done by knowledge workers – from writing and coding to legal research and customer service.
While some tech leaders remain optimistic about AI augmenting human roles, Gawdat insists the trend is toward replacement, not collaboration.
His views come as governments and companies around the world wrestle with how to regulate AI and prepare for its impact on labour markets.
Gawdat’s warning adds weight to the urgent conversation about how humanity should adapt to a future where AI may do more than just assist, it may render entire job categories obsolete.
