Elon Musk thinks Google “currently has the highest probability of being the leader” in the artificial intelligence industry.
Writing on X – formerly Twitter – the xAI CEO added that this advantage may be temporary, noting things “may change in a few years”.
He posted: “Outside of real-world AI, Google has the biggest compute (and data) advantage for now, so currently has the highest probability of being the leader.”
Musk’s admission underscores the fierce and rapidly evolving competition among leading AI developers, with companies investing heavily to expand capabilities at a breakneck pace.
Google, one of the biggest pioneers in AI innovation, has made huge progress on the Transformer architecture and ongoing advancements via DeepMind, and continues to push the envelope.
That said, Musk emphasised that Google’s edge might not be permanent.
The AI landscape remains fluid, driven by breakthroughs, new entrants, and infrastructure shifts.
He continued: “For the foreseeable future, the major AI companies will continue to prosper, as will xAI. There is just so much to do!”
Alongside his remarks on Google, Musk also reignited his dispute with Apple, accusing the company of “unfairly” promoting OpenAI’s ChatGPT in the App Store rankings.
He claimed Apple was giving preferential treatment to the AI chatbot developed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, with whom Musk has had a long-running feud.
Apple denied the accusation, telling Bloomberg the App Store is “designed to be fair and free of bias”.
The Cupertino-based company also stated that rankings are determined through a combination of downloads, engagement, and ratings.
With xAI aiming to grow its footprint and Musk openly challenging rivals, the competition for AI dominance is set to remain fierce, with both technical breakthroughs and corporate rivalries shaping the industry’s future.
