A Chinese company is developing the world’s first pregnancy robot.
The humanoid robot surrogate – which is in a “mature stage” of development – is being created by Dr Zhang Qifeng’s company Kaiwa Technology and he says the technology will mimic a pregnancy from conception to delivery.
Dr Zhang said: “The artificial womb technology is already in a mature stage, and now it needs to be implanted in the robot’s abdomen so that a real person and the robot can interact to achieve pregnancy, allowing the fetus to grow inside.”
The baby will grow inside an artificial womb – for a typical human gestation period – and receive nutrients through a tube.
The developing fetus will be surrounded by artificial amniotic fluid to mimic a real human pregnancy.
A prototype will go on sale for around £10,000 (100,000 yuan) next year.
The concept of the humanoid surrogate pregnancy robot was presented at the 2025 World Robot Conference in Beijing by Dr Zhang, according to the Chinese science and technology media outlet Kuai Ke Zhi.
Dr Zhang insisted that the artificial womb has already achieved significant results in animal experiments
The international journal Nature Communications, reported that researchers at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia successfully allowed a premature lamb, equating to 23 weeks of pregnancy in humans, to grow in an artificial womb known as the “biobag” in 2017.
