Google unveils major upgrade to Gemini image editing

Google has rolled out a major upgrade to its Gemini image-editing model, promising more accurate, seamless, and safe AI-powered photo edits across its apps and services.

Google has introduced a redesigned image-editing model for Gemini that promises greater accuracy, flexibility, and creative control for users.

In a blog post, the company revealed that the new system delivers improved handling of complex edits, such as realistic object removal, lighting adjustments, and context-aware image expansion.

The update builds on Google’s existing generative AI tools by offering a deeper understanding of image content, allowing for more natural results in professional and personal use cases.

Google said: “Gemini’s latest update allows users to make seamless edits that align more closely with their intent.

“Whether it’s extending the boundaries of a photo, refining details, or removing distractions, the new model significantly enhances what creators can achieve.”

According to Google, the upgraded model is also designed with safety in mind.

The company explained that it has introduced new safeguards to minimise harmful or misleading outputs, and images created using Gemini will continue to include metadata markers in line with industry transparency standards.

The update is now rolling out across Google’s products, including the Gemini app, Google Photos, and select Workspace integrations.

Developers will also gain access through the Gemini API, opening up opportunities for third-party platforms to integrate the new editing features.

The move highlights Google’s continued push to keep pace in the highly competitive generative AI space, where rivals such as OpenAI and Adobe are also investing heavily in image-editing technologies.

With Gemini positioned as its flagship multimodal AI, Google is under pressure to demonstrate practical, everyday applications that appeal to both casual users and professionals.

The company added: “This is another step toward our vision of making Gemini the most helpful AI tool across creativity, productivity, and problem-solving.”

With more powerful editing options now available, the update signals Google’s intent to solidify Gemini as a leading tool for the future of AI-driven visual content.
