Google pledges additional 9B USD in Virginia data centres

Google will invest $9 billion in Virginia data centres through 2026, expanding its cloud and AI infrastructure across the state.

Google has announced plans to invest an additional $9 billion in Virginian data centres through 2026.

The tech giant confirmed that the new commitment will fund the construction of a fresh facility in Chesterfield County, alongside major expansions at its existing campuses in Loudoun and Prince William counties.

Virginia has long been a hub for cloud and AI data centres, with Loudoun – dubbed “Data Center Alley” – housing the highest concentration of such facilities in the U.S.

Google said in a statement: “This investment reflects our commitment to building infrastructure that supports the growing demand for cloud and AI services while driving innovation and economic growth in Virginia.”

The move underscores how Big Tech is racing to expand domestic capacity amid the AI boom and pressure from Washington to reshore critical infrastructure.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly pushed companies to build more AI capacity in the U.S., arguing it is vital for economic and national security.

Google has already raised its annual capital expenditure guidance to $85 billion, up $10 billion from earlier in the year, with much of the increase tied to AI-related spending.

The company has not provided an exact date for when the Chesterfield site will go live, though a spokesperson noted that projects typically take 18 to 24 months to complete once construction begins.

Dominion Energy will provide power to the new facilities.

In addition to infrastructure spending, Google recently pledged $1 billion to give every Virginia-based college student a free year of access to its Google AI Pro plan, including AI tools and training.

The announcement comes as rivals Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta all pour billions into expanding their own AI-focused infrastructure.

Analysts say the latest commitments highlight how northern Virginia remains the epicentre of the U.S. data centre industry.
