Google has introduced Gemini 2.5 Computer Use, an advanced AI model that can operate apps and systems autonomously, marking a major milestone in its push toward fully agentic artificial intelligence.
Google has unveiled Gemini 2.5 Computer Use, a powerful new AI model designed to control digital devices and applications on behalf of users.
Announced in a post on the Google DeepMind blog, the Computer Use model allows Gemini to interact directly with apps, browsers and operating systems, performing complex multi-step tasks such as filling in forms, booking appointments, editing documents and configuring software settings autonomously.
Google describes the model as a major step toward creating “truly useful AI agents” capable of understanding both user intent and computer interfaces.
Google said in a statement: “We want Gemini to be able to help people get things done — not just generate text.”
The model operates by visually interpreting on-screen elements, simulating clicks and keystrokes, and verifying each step in real time to ensure accuracy and safety.
The technology is currently being tested internally, with Google confirming that Computer Use is part of its broader Gemini 2.5 family – an evolution of the system powering Gemini Advanced and Gemini for Workspace.
Google has claimed that in demonstrations, the AI successfully managed tasks like updating spreadsheets, replying to emails, and formatting presentations without direct user input.
The company has said strong safeguards are built into the model, including human-in-the-loop verification, permission prompts, and localised execution environments to protect sensitive data. Google added: “Security and privacy are foundational. Gemini only takes actions users approve, and all interactions are transparent.”
Analysts say Gemini Computer Use could push Google ahead of rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which are working on similar agentic AI systems.
If widely deployed, the tool could reshape how people work with computers – transforming Gemini from a chatbot into a full-fledged digital assistant capable of action as well as conversation.
