Shang-Chi star Simu Liu has confirmed that the Sleeping Dogs movie is back on track, revealing the “script draft is done”.
Simu Liu has confirmed the “script draft is done” for the long-awaited Sleeping Dogs movie.
Initially announced in 2017, the film adadptation of United Front’s action-adventure title had suffered development struggles and setbacks, but Liu, 36, has now confirmed the Sleeping Dogs movie is back on track.
Taking to X, the Shang-Chi actor posted a picture of his dog and added the caption: “In honour of our sleeping dogs script draft being done, here’s my sleepy dog (sic).”
When a commenter asked the Marvel star if they had “worked things out” with Sleeping Dogs’ IP holder and publisher Square Enix, Liu replied: “They’re absolutely great, it’s the studios that don’t seem to understand how important this IP is BUT we will get them there.”
The Sleeping Dogs film, produced by Original Film, has been in development for several years, and was initially announced with Donnie Yen attached to star as protagonist Wei Shen.
However, the project appeared to stall before Yen confirmed he had exited the project in January 2025.
The John Wick: Chapter 4 star, 62, told Polygon: “I spent a lot of time and did a lot of work with these producers, and I even invested some of my own money into obtaining the drafts and some of the rights.
“I waited for years. Years. And I really want to do it. I have all these visions in my head, and unfortunately … I don’t know, you know how Hollywood goes, right? I spent many, many years on it. It was an unfortunate thing.”
