Remedy Entertainment’s CEO Tero Virtala has stepped down, with studio co-founder Markus Maki appointed as the company’s interim boss.
Remedy Entertainment’s CEO Tero Virtala has stepped down.
The Max Payne and Alan Wake studio has announced Virtala – who headed up Remedy since 2016 – has left his position with immediate effect.
As a result, Remedy’s Board of Directors has appointed studio co-founder Markus Maki as interim CEO.
In a statement, Maki said of Virtala: “I want to thank Tero Virtala for his substantial contribution to the management of Remedy since 2016.
“I personally thank Tero for good cooperation and wish him all the best for the future.”
As Maki steps up to fill Virtala’s position, Remedy confirmed Henri Osterlund will take over the new CEO’s role as chairman of the board.
This comes after Remedy announced it would be adjusting its financial outlook for 2025 following “weak sales” of its first multiplayer game, FBC: Firebreak.
The studio recognised a non-cash impairment of €14.9 million, which represented the title’s development costs as well as its publishing and distribution rights.
Remedy now expects its operating profit to be “negative and below the previous year”.
The studio said in a statement: “On September 29th, Remedy released the first Major Update titled Breakpoint for FBC: Firebreak, which brought significant changes to the game’s core experience.
“Despite improved player and sales metrics after the update, sales have not reached Remedy’s internal targets.
“Remedy is recognising a non-cash impairment of capitalised development costs and allocated purchased publishing and distribution rights related to FBC: Firebreak.
“While we balance future investments to the title, we continue developing and improving the game in line with our updated long-term sales forecast.”
