Maika Monroe thinks the story of the It Follows sequel They Follow is “incredible” and hopes filming for the upcoming horror flick will begin next year.
Maika Monroe has teased the It Follows sequel They Follow has an “incredible” story.
The 32-year-old actress starred in the 2014 psychological horror flick as Jay Height and will reprise the role for its follow-on, and Monroe has now revealed she has read the script for They Follow and thinks the story is “very different from the original”.
During an interview with Discussing Film, she said: “I was sent the script and I thought it was incredible. It’s also very different from the original.
“I felt the original was a little more heightened and dramatic, and this I think is really quite grounded. [They Follow] follows the story of these two women that are just mentally dealing with a lot.”
The Longlegs star added she was hoping principal photography for They Follow would begin in 2026.
She said: “I thought it was a really interesting take on it. Fingers crossed it happens, next year is the rumor.”
It Follows tells the story of Jay Height, a young woman who becomes the target of a relentless supernatural entity passed on through a sexual encounter.
As the creature takes on different human forms and relentlessly pursues her, Jay and her friends struggle to find a way to survive and break the curse.
They Follow will see the return of writer and director David Robert Mitchell, and composer Disasterpeace recently confirmed he was in talks to come back for the sequel.
Monroe previously teased They Follow would be “bigger and darker” than It Follows.
During an interview with Collider, the Hot Summer Nights actress said: “David is brilliant. [It Follows] was changing the game in the genre, and he wouldn’t ever make a sequel if he didn’t think it was going to top it. He just knows what he wants to do and what he wants to make.
“I mean, at first I’m like, ‘Oh, a sequel? Where are we going to go here?’ And I read it, and it’s just so f****** good. It’s so good.”
Monroe added audiences would find Jay in a place where it is “maybe not what’s expected” in They Follow.
She continued: “I’m so excited. I think where you’ll meet Jay at this point is maybe not what’s expected, but it’s so cool.
“It’s just, of course, as everyone says for sequels, literally, though, is just bigger and darker and more f***** up. Reading it was the craziest thing ever.
“I am so excited for this role. It’s been a long time since I’ve been this excited to delve into something. There’s a lot there to play with, and I think it’s going to be incredibly challenging, for sure, but so fulfilling. Working with David, I can’t wait.”
Filming for They Follow was initially slated to begin in 2024 or early 2025, though production was pushed back for unknown reasons.
