Reba McEntire becomes tearful on The Voice over death of stepson Brandon Blackstock

Reba McEntire couldn’t contain her emotions after The Voice contestant Aubrey Nicole dedicated a performance to her cancer survivor father after her stepson Brandon Blackstock succumbed to the disease in August aged 48.

Reba McEntire broke down in tears on The Voice over her late stepson Brandon Blackstock.

The 70-year-old country singer couldn’t hold back her emotions after contestant Aubrey Nicole performed Martina McBride’s track I’m Gonna Love You Through It and dedicated it to her cancer survivor dad.

The theme is close to home for Reba after Brandon’s death from melanoma at the age of 48 in August and she took some time to compose herself after the performance.

She said: “I lost my oldest son, because he did not win with cancer.

“So that was a real reminder that life goes on, and we sing songs about it, so we can remember the ones that are around us that we love so much and that we lean on at times like this.”

Reba was handed tissues by fellow coach Snoop Dogg and spoke about how music can “grab” people emotionally.

She told the other coaches: “This is supposed to be a fun show, I know. But boy, that’s what country music does, it just brings out all the emotions and the stories, and it’ll grab you.”

The One Promise Too Late singer took to social media to pay tribute to Brandon following his death.

Reba, who was married to Brandon’s father Narvel Blackstock from 1989 to 2015, wrote on Instagram: “Last week, my stepson/oldest son Brandon Blackstock went home to be with God. His struggle is over and he is in eternal peace in God’s presence. There is no one else like him, and I’m thankful for the time we had together. His legacy and laughter will be carried on through his family.”

Brandon’s passing after a three-year battle with cancer was announced by a representative in August.

They told Us Weekly: “It is with great sadness that we share the news that Brandon Blackstock has passed away.

“Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years. He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family. We thank you for your thoughts and prayers and ask everyone to respect the family’s privacy during this very difficult time.”
