John Stamos’ Full House co-stars Jodie Sweetin and Andrea Barber recalled just how scared he was when acting with Ginger the chimpanzee in the season five episode titled Too Much Monkey Business.
John Stamos was “terrified” of acting opposite a “dangerous” chimpanzee in a Full House episode.
The 62-year-old actor – who played Uncle Jesse Katsopolis in the late 1980s, early 1990s sitcom – had close contact with Ginger the chimp in the memorable season five episode titled Too Much Monkey Business, and he was scared after producers warned “Don’t look it in the eye”.
John’s Full House co-stars Jodie Sweetin (Stephanie Tanner) and Andrea Barber (Kimmy Gibbler) recalled the episode of the How Rude, Tanneritos! podcast.
Andrea, 49, said: “Do you remember when we interviewed John and he talked about being terrified because they were like, ‘Don’t look it in the eye because chimps are dangerous.’
“They were like ‘Don’t. If you have to interact with it, it has to get to know you a little bit. But like, don’t look at it in the eye. Don’t smile at it because it’s a form of regret.’ Wild.”
Too Much Monkey Business saw the Tanner family temporarily live with Ginger, which Danny Tanner’s (Bob Saget’s) younger sister Wendy Tanner (Darlene Vogel) brought back with her from a research trip to Africa.
And in one scene, Ginger gets into bed with Uncle Jesse, who thinks the taps and caresses are coming from his wife Rebecca Katsopolis (Lori Loughlin), and ample smacks his bum, after rubbing his shoulders and playing with his hair.
Andrea remembered: “There was a lot of physical interaction, too. Like the chimp is smacking him at one point. I’m like, ‘That had to hurt. Chimps are very, very aggressive and strong.’
“And yeah, props to John for getting through this.”
Jodie, 43, added: “John is laughing so hard, too. It’s like he’s trying to keep it together, and he cannot, which I get. Like, if there were a chimp spanking me, I also would not be able to keep a straight face.”
In 2017, John recalled getting “welts on my butt” from all that smacking from Ginger.
He quipped to People: “I think when they ran out of ideas, they would say, ‘Let’s put Stamos with monkey. Bring a ferret. Do you have a ferret?’
“It was a different animal every week.”
