Red Dead Redemption 3 will ‘probably happen’, Rockstar co-found Dan Houser says

A third Red Dead Redemption will “probably happen” due to the success of the first two games, Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser has said.

A third Red Dead Redemption will “probably happen”.

The award-winning action/sandbox duology reached a fitting conclusion with 2018’s Red Dead Redemption II, but Rockstar Games’ co-founder Dan Houser believes a third instalment will likely be made due to how successful the franchise has been.

Speaking on the Lex Fridman Podcast, Houser said: “Because each of the [Grand Theft Auto] games was kind of a standalone story, it’s not quite the same.

“I think it probably would be, in some ways, sadder if someone continued on Red Dead, because it was a cohesive two-game arc.

“That might be more sad to hear someone working on that. But again, that probably will happen too. I don’t own the IP.

“That was sort of part of the deal – it’s a privilege to work on stuff, but you don’t necessarily own it.”

Houser revealed before both Red Dead Redemption games, he wanted to give another Rockstar title a bittersweet conclusion.

He said: “I would have liked to have, at the end of GTA IV, killed Niko, but you couldn’t do it. You know, the game doesn’t work out like that.”

Even so, Houser got his wish for 2010’s Red Dead Redemption, which ended with the heartbreaking death of John Marston.

He added: “Whether that was the right ending, 100 per cent the best ending from a pure storytelling perspective, I don’t know.”
