Idris Elba is returning for a new Luther film on Netflix, and he’ll be reunited with Ruth Wilson, who played Alice Morgan in the original BBC series.
Idris Elba is reuniting with Ruth Wilson for a new Luther film.
The 53-year-old actor is reprising his role as the titular detective in a new Netflix movie, and his former castmate – who was part of the original BBC series but absent from 2023’s Luther: The Fallen Sun – will join him for the upcoming feature.
The Hollywood Reporter confirmed Elba and Wilson – who play John Luther and Alice Morgan respectively – will be joined by Dermot Crowley, reprising the role of detective Martin Schenk.
Jamie Payne will be at the helm, having directed Fallen Sun, as well as episodes of the BBC show.
He said in a statement: “Neil [Cross] has yet again, created a wonderfully dark tale to bring us all back together.
“It’s a true joy to be back on the streets of Lutherland with the supreme talents that are Idris Elba and Dermot Crowley.
“I am also thrilled to be reunited with the brilliant and dangerous Alice Morgan played by the extraordinarily talented Ruth Wilson.”
Cross – who created and wrote the original show and penned the script for the 2023 film – has written the new story, which focuses on a wave of brutal and seemingly random murders across London.
He added: “Luther, Alice and Schenk are more than characters to me, they’re family.
“I never stop wondering where they are, what’s become of them … and what horrors might be stirring in the shadows of London while Luther’s not around.
“So we decided to get together and find out what happens next.”
When the movie dropped in 2023, Elba insisted the gritty story was more “relatable” than the James Bond franchise.
He told Magic Radio at the time: “The Bond series is an incredible staple to the UK and the world right, but Luther could take up some of that real estate.
“It is not about espionage, but it is about how to catch them. I think Luther tends to be a little bit more relatable, you know grounded. You know guys that creep from under your bed… this film has certainly taken it a little more cyber if you like with Andy Serkis’s character.”
Elba insisted the Luther movie had been “a long time coming”, and two years ago he was already planning for the future on the big screen.
He said: “Hopefully it is the beginning of the new chapter. Sounds corny, but you know we have gone from television, we have gone as far as we can and now, we have got the world as our stage. Big epic landscapes and you know infinite stories.”
He suggested that Luther could come up against multiple villains in the next movie, although it’s not clear if the newly announced film follows that plot.
He added: “No spoilers but I think it might be more than one.”
