Lando Norris was crowned World Drivers’ Champion at the 2026 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Lando Norris has been crowned Formula 1 World Drivers’ Champion for the first time in his career after securing third place in a tense season finale at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
The McLaren driver entered the showdown needing only a podium finish to seal the title, and he delivered under immense pressure, crossing the line behind race winner Max Verstappen and his team mate Oscar Piastri. The result was enough to confirm Norris as the sport’s newest world champion, capping off a breakthrough campaign that has seen him rise from promising talent to the pinnacle of motorsport.
After stepping out of his car, an emotional Norris said: “It’s hard to put into words. This has been my dream since I was a kid. To finally call myself world champion is unbelievable. I owe everything to the team, my family, and the fans who’ve supported me all the way.”
The 26‑year‑old Briton becomes the first McLaren driver to win the championship since Sir Lewis Hamilton in 2008, ending a 17‑year drought for the iconic team. His consistency across the season – marked by multiple victories and regular podiums – proved decisive in edging out Verstappen and Piastri in the final standings.
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella hailed the achievement as “a historic moment for the team and for Lando,” adding: “We’ve worked tirelessly to get back to the front of the grid. This title is proof of what’s possible when talent and determination come together.”
The Yas Marina Circuit provided a fitting backdrop for the climax of the season, with thousands of fans witnessing Norris’ crowning moment. As fireworks lit up the night sky, the new champion celebrated with his crew, draped in the Union Jack and cheered on by a jubilant McLaren garage.
