Instagram to provide users with more control over Reels algorithm

Instagram’s AI-powered ‘Your Algorithm’ will give users on the social media platform more choice over what they see on their Reels.

Instagram is giving users more control of their Reels algorithm.

The social media platform has launched the new AI-powered ‘Your Algorithm’ feature that allows users to see which topics Instagram already thinks they are interested in based on previous activity, and then either remove or add topics to better direct the kind of clips they want to see.

The feature became available in the US on Wednesday (10.12.25) and will be rolled out in English globally “soon”.

Instagram users can access it by selecting the icon resembling two hearts on line sliders that appears at the top-right corner of Reels videos.

From there, users are able to see the AI-generated summary of topics that are recommended for them and have the chance to fine tune their preferences and share a list of interests on their Instagram Story.

Instagram said: “As your interests evolve over time, we want to give you more meaningful ways to control what you see on Instagram, starting with Reels.

“Using AI, you can now more easily view and personalise the topics that shape your Reels, making recommendations feel even more tailored to you.”

The social media giant is planning to bring adjustable algorithms to the Explore tab and “more place in the app soon”.

A similar development is also in the pipeline for Meta’s Threads app, allowing users to tell the algorithm to show them more or less specified content by tagging posts with “dear algo”.

Furthermore, Meta is adding the ability to give feedback on why something in your Reels and Facebook feed is not relevant for you, and “will introduce new ways for you to shape your Feed and provide algorithm feedback in the coming months”.
