Melissa Joan Hart has recalled being told she was being “fired” from Scary Movie and Sabrina, The Teenage Witch on the same night.
Melissa Joan Hart was fired twice in one night during “one of the worst days” of her life.
The 49-year-old actress has recalled attending the 1999 Drive Me Crazy premiere with Britney Spears after being told she had been pulled from Scary Movie in favour of Carmen Electra, before finding out Sabrina, The Teenage Witch bosses were firing her over a Maxim magazine cover shoot.
Appearing on the Betches YouTube channel, Melissa revealed she was planning to skip the screening and secretly drive in a limousine up to Vancouver to film the horror comedy Scream spoof.
However, she said: “I was supposed to be this small part in the beginning, that’s like the Drew Barrymore knockoff part, but they decided when I did the [prior] fitting that I didn’t have big enough boobs for that part.
“I got a call and it was like, ‘Turn around, go back to your premiere. You’ve been fired from the movie.’
“And I was like, alright, at least I get to hang out here.”
However, once she arrived at the premiere she received another setback due to her recent racy Maxim cover shoot, where she appeared topless with a bedsheet covering her chest.
She added: “So I was already crying and waiting for everyone to finish the movie and come on over.
“And when they get there, my lawyer meets up with me [at the premiere] and says, ‘Because of your cover of Maxim magazine, you’re being fired from your show.’
“So then I really start crying, and then my dad comes and hugs me, and I don’t see my dad often so, like, for him to hug me. I was like, ‘Oh my God, my dad’s hugging me!’ It was just a dramatic night.”
On the podcast, she was looking at a photo of herself with Britney Spears – whose song Drive Me Crazy featured on the soundtrack for the film of the same name – at the premiere.
She said: “If you look at my eyes, they’re very bloodshot because this was what I would consider, if you read my book, one of the worst days of my life at the time.”
Thankfully for Melissa, she held onto the role of Sabrina, with the sitcom later moving from ABC to The WB after four seasons.
Meanwhile, she recently recalled turning down an offer to pose for Playboy following the Maxim shoot.
She told the Sibling Rivalry podcast: “I did Maxim magazine and he and my father were both being tortured by people at work going like ‘Look at your daughter! Look at your sister!’
“And then Playboy magazine came and asked me to do something, and I was like, ‘I can’t do it.’
“‘I can’t do it’, and they offered me a lot of money, and I was like, ‘I can’t do it because I don’t want my brother to be hurt… the last thing he needs. He’s already getting tortured by me and underwear.’ “
