Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic will launch earlier than 2030, game director promises

Following rumours that the game would not be seen until 2030 at the earliest, director Casey Hudson has insisted Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic will release “before” then.

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic will arrive sooner than 2030, according to game director Casey Hudson.

Following a report from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier that suggested the upcoming action-RPG launching by 2030 was an “optimistic guess” given developer Arcanaut Studios was founded in July 2025, Hudson has dismissed the rumours and promised FOTOR will launch “before” then.

Taking to X, Hudson said: “Don’t worry about the ‘not till 2030’ rumors. Game will be out before then. I’m not getting any younger!”

While no release window or platforms have been confirmed, Hudson’s comments suggest Fate of the Old Republic is progressing more quickly than expected for a studio of its age.

Arcanaut was formed specifically to build large-scale, narrative-driven RPGs, with Fate of the Old Republic positioned as the studio’s debut title.

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic was announced at The Game Awards 2025 as a spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

The project is being helmed by Hudson, who is best known for directing the original KOTOR and BioWare’s Mass Effect trilogy.

Set during the final days of the Old Republic era, the game explores a galaxy in transition, offering players the role of a Force user whose choices shape both the story and their moral alignment.

Although it is not a direct sequel or continuation of the KOTOR duology, Lucasfilm Games has framed the project as a modern reinterpretation of its core ideas, including player agency, consequence-driven storytelling and deep world-building.

Hudson has described the title as an opportunity to revisit the design philosophy that made KOTOR influential, updated with contemporary technology and production values.

Lucasfilm Games vice president Douglas Reilly has also highlighted the creative freedom of the Old Republic setting, which allows the team to tell an original story without being constrained by the film timeline.

More details, including gameplay and release plans, are expected to be shared as development continues.
