Fallout legend Ron Perlman reveals low payday for iconic game

Ron Perlman has revealed the low payday he received for the first game in the Fallout franchise.

Ron Perlman was paid just “$40 and a sandwich” for his Fallout work.

The 75-year-old actor first served as the narrator on the beloved post-apocalyptic video game franchise for the first game in 1997, and now he’s opened up on the surprisingly low payday he was given for his work.

He told The Joe Vulpis Podcast: “They invited me to do the very first Fallout and gave me $40 and a sandwich.”

The game became a huge success, but Perlman – who is best known for the iconic line, “War. War never changes” – claims he had forgotten all about the project when he was contacted about a sequel.

He added: “A year and a half later, I get a call, ‘Hey, you remember Fallout?’ No. ‘Well, there’s a second one.’

“I go, ‘Why?’ ‘Because the first one went through the f**king roof. I go, ‘Really? Cool.’

“Do the second one, then the third, fourth, and now it’s a whole brand.”

In recent years, the game series has taken on a new life on the small screen with an Amazon Prime Video show, which recently returned for its second season, with a third announced in May 2025.

Despite being such a big part of the franchise, Perlman admitted he’s never played any of the games, which also include Fallout 3 (2008), Fallout: New Vegas (2010), Fallout 4 (2015) and Fallout 76 (2018), with Fallout 5 in the works.

Indeed, he insisted he didn’t actually meet the developers at any point either.

He said: “No. I did a couple of lines, got my $40 and my sandwich, and went home.”

It was previously reported that Fallout 5 is in development, although details are being kept under wraps and there is no release date in mind.
