Google has tackled an issue which meant Gmail users were flooded with spam warnings.

Over the weekend, users were battling emails being misclassified as spam, along with additional spam warnings and delays, with the cause still unclear.

As reported by Tech Radar, some users started seeing Primary, Social and Updates emails in their Primary inbox, while some spam messages appeared as legitimate correspondence.

There were also in inbox delays, which was a problem for those using their email for two-factor authentication.

The issue started at around 5am PT (1pm GMT) on Saturday (24.01.26), as the Google Workspace status update read: “Gmail users might see banners indicating missing spam checks.”

In a separate updates, the team added: “Some Gmail users experienced a misclassification of emails in their inbox, additional spam warnings, and delays in receiving email.

“We advise the users to be extra diligent in lieu of missing spam checks.”

There were complaints on Downdetector related to the incident, which was marked as fixed by 9:55pm PT.

However, the cause of the issue is yet to be confirmed.

The company promised users, in an update on the Workspace dashboard: “We will publish an analysis of this incident once we have completed our internal investigation.

“We thank you for your patience while we worked on resolving the issue.”

Before the fix, Google warned users to remain vigilant, particularly while the incident is being investigated.

A spokesperson told Engadget: “We are actively working to resolve the issue. As always, we encourage users to follow standard best practices when engaging with messages from unknown senders.”
