Antonio Banderas has been cast in supernatural thriller Unmerciful Good Fortune.
The 65-year-hold Oscar nominee will appear alongside an all-star cast – which includes Rosario Dawson, Scott Eastwood and Susan Sarandon – in a big screen adaptation of Edwin Sanchez’s stage play.
The feature film version comes from writer-director Tirsa Hackshaw, and follows Dawson as celebrity attorney Maritza Cruz.
She gets embroiled in a high profile case involving a young woman accused of multiple killings.
However, she claims to have psychic abilities and insisted she has committed murder to prevent worse things happening, which sends Cruz in a spiral of morality and spirituality.
Banderas will play Pito Cruz in the movie, while Eastwood has been cast as Paul Leslie, and Sarandon will portray Dr. Irene Charles.
In a statement, Hacksaw said: “We’ve been joking in prep that it’s a murderer’s row; the talent joining this film is staggering.
“It’s the perfect lineup to tell this darkly lyrical story that sits at the edge of the psychological and the supernatural.
“Beyond the sheer talent, meeting Antonio and seeing what he’s built in Spain unlocked the potential of this movie in ways I hadn’t imagined.
“We’re thrilled to channel that energy with Antonio and show what’s possible when you tap into a place alive with extraordinary creativity.”
Tom DeSanto – who will produce alongside Corey Large, Dawson, Brian Kirchoff and Jordan Wilson – praised Banderas as a “living legend and part of Hollywood royalty”.
He added: “The talent we have brought together for Unmerciful Good Fortune just shows how good the story is.
“Like Weapons and Black Phone, it’s a supernatural thriller that is going to bring people back to theatres and have them talking about it for days after.”
Banderas’ recent roles include the likes of Paddington in Peru, Indiana Jones and Dial of Destiny, and Babygirl.
He has also been focused on producing live theatre in Spain – a venture which has been more about the art than making money, with a production of Company costing around €190,000 with a full live orchestra, technical staff and a large cast.
He told Mundo America: “We filled the theatre to not lose much. But they can’t take away the dance from me. I did what I wanted, how I wanted to do it, and with the perfect people.”
