Nintendo Switch tops Nintendo DS to become company’s best-selling console ever

Nintendo’s Switch has overtaken the DS to become the company’s best-selling console ever, with over 155 million units sold worldwide.

The Nintendo Switch has officially overtaken the Nintendo DS to become the company’s best-selling console of all time.

According to Ninendo’s latest financial results – which cover the first nine months of FY2026 up to December 31, 2025 – the Switch has now sold 155.37 million units worldwide.

That narrowly surpasses the lifetime sales of the Nintendo DS, which stands at 154.02 million units after more than two decades on the market.

Nintendo shifted a further 3.25 million Switch units during the nine-month reporting period alone, underscoring the platform’s remarkable longevity nearly nine years after launch.

With this milestone, the Switch also becomes the second best-selling console of all time, trailing only Sony’s PlayStation 2, which remains the overall leader with roughly 160 million units sold.

While the gap is narrowing, the PS2’s long-standing record still holds for now.

Nintendo’s success with the Switch comes even as it transitions to new hardware.

The recently launched Nintendo Switch 2 has sold 17.37 million units as of the end of December 2025, making it Nintendo’s fastest-selling dedicated games platform to date following its June release.

The company described the launch as a “good start,” supported by strong first-party software performance.

Titles such as Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, and Kirby Air Riders have all posted strong, multi-million sales figures, helping to drive early momentum for the new system.

Together, the continued sales of the original Switch and the rapid uptake of its successor highlight Nintendo’s rare ability to sustain a console ecosystem across generations.
