Home Improvement star Zachery Ty Bryan sentenced over DUI arrest

Zachery Ty Bryan, who rose to fame as Brad Taylor on 1990s sitcom Home Improvement, has been sentenced following his 2024 DUI arrest.

Zachery Ty Bryan has been sentenced to 16 months in prison over a DUI arrest.

The 44-year-old actor – who famously played Brad Taylor in Tim Allen’s sitcom Home Improvement between 1991 and 1999 – had pleaded guilty to driving under the influence in connection to an arrest in 2024.

As reported by TMZ, court documents show Bryan was sentenced at a rearraignment after making a pact with the prosecution.

He admitted to having a BAC of 0.15 percent, which is almost twice the legal limit of 0.08.

Bryan also has two previous DUI convictions, which made his case more difficult.

The judge refused to give the actor probation, and instead sentenced him to 16 months in county jail, of which he has been credited with 57 days served.

After completing the sentence, the actor will then have to address warrants related to the offense from out of the county.

In July 2023, the actor was charged with fourth-degree felony assault and third-degree robbery and harassment – and ordered to spend seven days in jail.

And in October 2020, Zachery was involved in a domestic violence dispute and arrested on charges of alleged fourth-degree assault and strangulation, leading to him pleading guilty to misdemeanour menacing and misdemeanour assault.

His sentencing included 36 months of ‘bench probation’ and participation in the Bridges2Safety program.

In November 2025, Bryan noted how “fame as a child actor left scars” which he has struggled to deal with.

He told TMZ that while “being thrust into the spotlight at nine years old brought pressures I wasn’t equipped to handle”, he knows “that’s no justification for my choices as an adult”.

He added: “The truth is, I’ve struggled with the lasting effects of early fame, addiction, and poor decision-making, which have hurt people I care about and led to repeated legal issues, including DUIs and past domestic incidents.”

In 2022, his former castmate Tim Allen described the child star as “a great kind who has grown into a complex man”.

He told The Hollywood Reporter: “All you can do is step aside and let somebody go through their process.

“At a certain point, he deviated from the guy I know to somebody who is reacting to situations that I had nothing to do with and can’t control.”
