Milly Alcock has revealed the moment she was “s***-scared” about her career prospects.
Milly Alcock was “s***-scared” her life was over after House of the Dragon and Sirens.
The 25-year-old actress – who is playing Kara Zor-El, AKA Supergirl, in the upcoming comic book blockbuster – was tempted to never take on another big franchise role after playing Young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in the Game of Thrones spinoff series, but she reconsidered after work totally dried up following 2025’s Sirens.
She told Vanity Fair: “I was so s***-scared that my life was over at 22. And, of course, it wasn’t.”
When she had the opportunity to join the DC universe in Supergirl, she didn’t want to let it slip.
She added: “I kind of bullied myself into it.”
Milly has recalled having “crazy dreams” of herself “at the foot of a tsunami”, which could be related to her entering another massive franchise.
She admitted: “Of course I’m scared. Of course I want people to like me and the movie. But ultimately, it’s out of my control.”
However, the fandom around Game of Thrones’ prequel House of the Dragon may have been good preparation for comic book fans.
She said: “It definitely made me aware that simply existing as a woman in that space is something that people comment on.
“We have become very comfortable having this weird ownership of women’s bodies. I can’t really stop them. I can only be myself.”
Meanwhile, Milly admitted ever since she was a child, her single mother had “instilled this blind confidence” in her.
The family “struggled financially”, and by 13 she was cold-calling talent agencies.
She recalled: “‘If those idiots can do it, why can’t you?’ Her words, not mine. [laughs] It just lit a fire under my a***.”
By the time she hit her senior year of high school, Milly was cast in Australian TV series Upright, and her mother encouraged her to quit school to pursue her dreams.
The actress said: “She told me to do it… I was bad at school—that was branded as naughty.
“We have this weird halo effect that if you’re a clever kid academically, then therefore, you are good.
“Acting was the only thing that I was given that halo for, and it’s intoxicating to be chosen like that.”
