Apple is reportedly planning to launch a new Ultra range of high-price products packed with new features including a foldable iPhone and a MacBook with a touchscreen.
Apple is reportedly planning to launch a new Ultra range featuring a foldable iPhone and a MacBook with a touchscreen.
The technology giant’s upcoming launches remain shrouded in secrecy but new rumours suggest the team is working on expanding the Ultra range beyond the Apple Watch to include the brand’s most expensive and feature-rich offerings to date – including the long-rumoured folding iPhone as well as a MacBook laptop with an OLED touchscreen.
According to Macworld, the company will upgrade the Pro range of iPhones later in the year but the new foldable phone will be the “flagship” product for the expanded Ultra range and will be the “higher-end model of Appleās smartphone line”.
The publication reports the foldable phone launch is planned for September meaning it could be in the hands of customers by the end of the year and it’s likely to be branded as the iPhone Ultra. Previous reports had suggested the new offering might be called the iPhone Fold.
The company is also said to be hoping to introduce the MacBook Ultra which will cost “significantly more” than the latest MacBook Pro but will be packed with new features that haven’t been seen on previous models.
Macworld reports the new laptop will exist alongside the MacBook Pro, which will be seen as a “more affordable option”, and the launch is likely to take place in the first half of next year.
The company may even turn its attention to producing new iPads and AirPods with the publication reporting an iPad Ultra could feature a foldable screen while the upgraded ear buds could contain a camera.
The new launches later this year are likely to be the first overseen by Apple’s new CEO John Ternus, the current head of Apple’s hardware engineering department who is set to take over from Tim Cook on September 1.
Cook will remain with the company as executive chairman at the California behemoth and he will “assist with certain aspects of the company, including engaging with policymakers around the world”.
In a statement, the outgoing CEO said: “It has been the greatest privilege of my life to be the CEO of Apple and to have been trusted to lead such an extraordinary company.
“I love Apple with all of my being, and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with a team of such ingenious, innovative, creative, and deeply caring people who have been unwavering in their dedication to enriching the lives of our customers and creating the best products and services in the world.”
Cook also hailed his successor as a “visionary” with “the soul of an innovator”.
He said of Ternus: “He is without question the right person to lead Apple into the future. I could not be more confident in his abilities and his character.”
