Euphoria creator says Sydney Sweeney becomes ‘brilliant’ with a little ‘push’

Euphoria creator Sam Levinson has opened up on how Sydney Sweeney is able to adapt on set.

Sam Levinson says Sydney Sweeney “becomes brilliant” on set “if you push it a little bit”.

The Euphoria creator has opened up on working with the 28-year-old actress – who had starred as Cassie Howard in all three seasons of the hit HBO drama – and praised her for the way she adapted after a shake-up on set which saw a key scene changed on the day of the shoot.

Speaking as part of The Hollywood Reporter’s Directors in Focus event, he said: “What’s interesting is if you push it a little bit, she becomes brilliant.

“You just do a few more takes, and she can reach these levels that are very honest emotionally, but also deeply funny. She’s able to anchor the scene with this kind of madness and chaos going on around her.”

Sam also paid tribute to Sydney’s co-star Zendaya, who showed her talent for physical comedy in a scene which sees her character Rue trying to escape a Jeep on top of the border wall.

He added: “What’s so spectacular about Zendaya as an actor is the physicality that she has, and I think it goes back to her Disney training, that she’s able to move with such humour and tell a story.

“I always knew going into opening up this season that I wanted to do something that really just threw us into the middle of the action, but with a certain kind of absurdity to it.

“We ended up having this border wall sequence, which I think we’ll take a look at. I sort of imagined it as a mix of Buster Keaton set in this modern drug world.”

Zendaya and Sydney have been caught up in frenzied speculation suggesting they don’t get along, after they were not pictured together at the red carpet premiere for Euphoria’s third season, while Sydney was missing from a cast photo taken to promote the new Euphoria episodes.

However, their castmate Jessica Blair Herman has insisted there has been absolutely “no drama” between the pair.

During an appearance on Fox 5’s Good Day New York show, Jessica recently declared everyone on the set of Euphoria got along well.

She said: “They really did. And I’m not just saying that.”

She went on to add: “[There is] no drama. Really, they’ve created this beautiful working relationship and everyone wants to do the work, to come in and do the job.”

However, Jessica explained Sydney and The Drama star Zendaya are often separate on set because they are involved in separate Euphoria storylines and rarely film scenes together.

She said: “To be fair, when I was there, they’re not sharing scenes. Their storylines are very separate, you’re shooting on different days and stuff.”
