Benedict Cumberbatch was involved in a furious roadside clash with another cyclist in central London.
After the actor, 49, was accused of riding through a red light he was filmed getting into a heated confrontation with a “vigilante” biker, which was witnessed by stunned commuters and fans.
Sherlock and Doctor Strange star Benedict was seen arguing with a masked cyclist at around 5.30pm on Tuesday (05.05.26) after an incident in a cycle lane reportedly escalated into a 10-minute public row – with the footage emerging on Sunday (10.05.26.)
The exchange comes as Benedict continues to remain in the spotlight following recent discussion surrounding his upcoming film projects and the enduring popularity of his Marvel role as Doctor Stephen Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
According to an eyewitness, the confrontation began after Benedict allegedly rode his cargo bike through a red light before another cyclist followed him down the road.
Video footage of the altercation shows the other cyclist shouting: “You’re deluded, you’re lying. I was behind you the entire time.”
Benedict replied: “Dude, you verbally abused me.”
The cyclist then responded with a sarcastic crying gesture and said: “Oh no, I verbally abused the guy who completely repeatedly broke the law.”
Benedict admitted: “I did it once.”
The other man continued: “And then you went through a zebra crossing, you went through three lights.”
Benedict insisted: “No, I did not.”
A witness who filmed the exchange described the atmosphere as chaotic, claiming the argument repeatedly reignited as passersby stopped to watch.
The onlooker was quoted in the Daily Mail saying: “It was crazy. It was such a pompous road rage it almost felt like it had been staged. He was calling Benedict ‘deluded’ and ‘a liar’.”
They added: “Benedict still managed to charm everyone watching even though he was having a meltdown. They went at each other about five times.”
The witness continued: “It was really busy, and they blocked the lane so no one else could get through.”
Describing the cyclist confronting the actor, a source said: “The masked guy was obviously some kind of vigilante – he was really taken aback when he saw it was Benedict Cumberbatch, but he doubled down on his rage.”
The witness added: “Everyone was just stood there with jaws dropped.”
A group of schoolchildren watching the row reportedly recognised Benedict from his role in Marvel’s Doctor Strange films and asked him for photographs after the argument subsided.
The confrontation is not the first time Benedict has reportedly been involved in a dispute with a cyclist. In 2019, the actor was involved in another altercation in Freshwater on the Isle of Wight after his car reportedly knocked a cyclist off his bike on a country lane.
According to reports at the time, the cyclist slapped Benedict after the collision before realising who he was.
A friend of the rider later claimed the actor was “lucky” he had not been punched.
Despite the heated exchange, Benedict reportedly offered the injured cyclist water, clothing and a lift to a nearby medical centre.
The incident was later reported to police, although Benedict did not pursue charges.
Benedict, who also earned acclaim for portraying Alan Turing in The Imitation Game and starred in BBC drama Sherlock alongside Martin Freeman, has frequently spoken in recent years about the pressures of fame and public scrutiny in London.
