Tim Allen starred as Tim ‘The Toolman’ Taylor in the beloved series, which ran from 1993 to 1999 and told the story of a fictional TV show and the busy family life of its host.
Tim Allen is blaming the Home Improvement cast’s “personality problems” for preventing the proposal revival from moving forward.
The 72-year-old actor starred as Tim ‘The Toolman’ Taylor in the beloved series, which ran from 1993 to 1999 and told the story of a fictional TV show and the busy family life of its host.
A revival has long been rumoured, but as he promoted his new movie Toy Story 5 – in which he voices space ranger Buzz Lightyear – Tim told Us Weekly that it’s come to a standstill.
He told Us Weekly: “They keep talking about how it could move forward, but they get stuck (because) there are some personality problems right now with the boys.”
Tim went on to say that the actors who played his sons in the show – Zachery Ty Bryan, Jonathan Taylor Thomas and Taran Noah Smith – have “their own issues”, but declined to add any more details about the said issues.
Tim continued: “I always thought it would be cool if it was a story about them. That’s a little challenging right now, to put it mildly.”
Despite Tim opting not to reveal specifics about the actors, it seems likely he was referring to Bryan’s ongoing legal issues – including being sentenced to 19 months in prison in March for violating his parole.
The 44-year-old appeared virtually at the sentencing, as he’s currently already in jail in California after being sentenced to 16 months over a driving under the influence (DUI) conviction from 2024.
That conviction came as he was on probation following a 2023 domestic violence conviction, with the terms of the probation stating that he couldn’t drink alcohol, leave the area without obtaining permission in advance, commit any new crimes or contact his victim.
Bryan was subsequently arrested five times in three different states – violating his parole on each occasion – and also faces DUI charges in Oklahoma.
According to reports, authorities there are planning to extradite Bryan once his jail term in California comes to an end.
As for the other two actors who played Tim’s sons on Home Improvement – Jonathan Taylor Thomas, 44, has been taking a break from acting after his hotly anticipated career after the show failed miserably.
He has made a couple of small screen appearances in the 2000s, including on Tim’s show Last Man Standing from 2013 to 2015.
While Taran Noah Smith, who played Tim’s youngest son Mark, ditched acting as soon as Home Improvement came to an end.
He said in an interview in 2001: “I started Home Improvement when I was seven, and the show ended when I was 16. I never had the chance to decide what I wanted to do with my life.
“When I was 16, I knew that I didn’t want to act anymore.”
