YouTube is bringing back private messages for users 18 or older.

The video sharing platform previously discontinued its DMs feature in 2019 after just two years, but late last year the company started testing in-app messaging, which had been a “top feature request” from users.

This time, YouTube users will have to verify their age before accessing the feature, while they can only talk with someone after sending an invitation link on a third-party messaging platform.

If you click the Messages icon at the top right of the app, a link will appear, suggesting the feature is intended for users who already know each other.

In a blog post, YouTube described the feature as a way for “friends and family” to share videos.

They said: “Our community loves to share videos with their friends and family, and we want them to be able to do it in one place.

“Whether it’s a new music video, a helpful tutorial, or a funny Short, this update will give users a new way to share right where they’re watching.”

The system is being rolled out to the US and “other global locations”.

YouTube added: “This update builds on the positive user response we’ve seen in the countries where it’s already live.”

YouTube also reiterated that the platform’s Community Guidelines will apply to private messages.

They continued: “As with all features on YouTube, our Community Guidelines apply to all shared content and messages.

“We’re excited for user feedback in new markets and look forward to expanding even further soon.”
