The Boroughs, Netflix’s sci-fi series executive produced by the Duffer Brothers, won’t be returning for a second season.
The Duffer Brothers’ new series The Boroughs has been cancelled after one season.
Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer stayed in the world of sci-fi for their next Netflix show, but now it’s been reported the programme won’t be returning for a second run.
According to Deadline, the streamer has decided not to continue with a second season of The Boroughs, which is executive produced by the siblings.
It’s said there had been talk about renewing the show, while a writers room had opened for a potential season two.
Sources also claimed that at one point, there was a suggestion of filming season two and three back-to-back.
The Boroughs, which was created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, had positive reviews, but modest ratings against a sizeable budget thanks to special effects and an all-star cast featuring the likes of Alfred Molina, Geena Davis and Alfre Woodard.
The logline for the show read: “In a seemingly perfect retirement community, a grieving newcomer’s monstrous encounter inspires him to join a misfit crew of unlikely heroes who uncover a dark secret that proves their ‘golden years’ are more dangerous, and they are more formidable, than anyone expect.”
Meanwhile, the Duffers’ other Netflix show Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen, which also launched this year, is seen as a limited series and won’t be returning.
Currently, the only project the brothers have on Netflix is animated spinoff Stranger Things: Tales From ’85.
Earlier this week, Paramount confirmed the Duffers’ mysterious next project will be released on November 3, 2028.
It will mark their first since leaving Netflix after a decade to launch a new four-year exclusive deal with Paramount, which will span movie, TV and streaming projects.
The duo will write and direct what the studio is describing as an event film, while plot details are being kept closely under wraps.
When the Paramount move was announced last summer, the Duffers said in a statement: “We couldn’t be more thrilled to be joining the Paramount family. To be part of that mission is not just exciting – it’s the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.
“And to do so at a studio with such a storied Hollywood legacy is a privilege we don’t take lightly.
“We’re also excited to reunite with our friends Cindy [Holland] and Matt [Thunell], who were among the very first to believe in us and an unusual little script we wrote that became Stranger Things.
“They took a chance on us in 2015, and they’re taking a chance again – we can’t wait to create new stories together.”
