JoJo Siwa was pleased to read boyfriend Chris Hughes praising the way she deals with being trolled, because it isn’t a topic they tend to discuss.
JoJo Siwa and Chris Hughes “don’t speak about” being trolled.
The 23-year-old singer – who has been romancing the 33-year-old star since they met on UK reality TV show Celebrity Big Brother last year – felt good when she recently read an article in which her boyfriend praised the way she handles online criticism because they prefer to focus on the positives with one another.
She told Us Weekly magazine: “He’s always very supportive, and I actually just read that same article.
“I saw the comments online, but then I saw him speak to someone over in the UK and he really praised how I handle [criticism].
“It’s interesting because there’s sort of an element to our relationship where we actually don’t speak about it. We don’t speak about that.
“Everyone wants to feel proud, right? And so it gave me a chance to go, ‘Oh, he’s proud of me for how I handle it. I do handle it good, right? And he thinks that, right?’
“He thinks that of me, and so that was actually really nice for me to read because we don’t speak about it to protect ourselves from it. We choose to have our stuff just be positive, fun, loving conversations, not negative stuff.”
But that doesn’t mean the pair don’t have difficult conversations, though they don’t happen often.
JoJo added: “If we ever need to, we do. There’s only been one time with him where I’ve been like, ‘I’m not good right now,’ and he’s there for me.”
JoJo is set to take part in Fox’s new gameshow, Nation’s Dumbest – where contestants including Carmen Electra, Ice-T, Steve-O, Hilaria Baldin, Elle King and Dr. Drew Pinsky will be doing their best not to win – and while she’s confident in her own abilities, she thinks teaming up with Chris would give them an edge because they are both “really knowledgeable” in different fields.
She said: “I think we actually have a different world of smarts. I think Chris is really knowledgeable. Obviously, he’s a bit older than me, and so he has more life knowledge. But I also think he’s really knowledgeable in the world of sports, in the world of horses.
“He has his worlds that he’s really knowledgeable in, whereas I have my worlds that I’m really knowledgeable in. So I think together we come with a lot of separate knowledge. I would say we’re pretty equal when it comes to smarts.”
Meanwhile, Chris recently insisted it is “not as tricky as people think” to maintain his long-distance relationship with JoJo because he is based in the UK and she is in the US.
He told the Daily Mail newspaper: “It is tricky, but it’s not as tricky as people think.
“So many people ask me this, and it’s like, before the last couple of months, we’d see each other every month, one way or another, whether she be over here or I go out there, so it’s never as strenuous as people think.
“I think when you can jump on a flight and get yourself out there, if you’ve got the ability to do that and you’ve got the time, then it’s a lovely thing, really.”
Chris noted that despite the culture clash between the UK and US, he loves “spending time with her and her family and the dogs”, and he always has “a great time” over there.
