The yoga instructor was 27 years old when she met the 30 Rock star, who is 25 years her senior, in 2011 and they went on to marry the following year, and Hilaria is aware people have accused her of “gold digger vibes”, but she’s insisted that was never the case.
Asked if the comments had hurt her, she told SiriusXM’s Page Six Radio: “Yes. Because I’m not that way. He, from the beginning — I don’t think I’ve ever said this — but he would always try to buy me things, and I would be like, ‘No, I don’t want this.’
“I was like, ‘I don’t want you to buy me something, because I want to know that I like you for you, because I don’t want to be a prisoner either.’
“Like hello, it’s two ways: People who go into that, they get stuck in a really bad situation. And I was like, ‘I need to know that I want to be here.’”
Hilaria and Alec went on to have children Carmen, 12, Rafael,11, Leonardo, nine, Romeo, eight, Eduardo, five, Maria, also five, and Ilaria, three, and she noted that was a huge brood for a “gold differ”.
She said: “I think that that is like the test. Like, guys, are you still going to call me a gold digger? I mean, first of all, seven kids, not what gold diggers should do. Have one then get out. Don’t have seven, cause they’re very expensive.”
Hilaria has just returned from a solo trip with her children and it made her realise that the kids need to learn some life skills to make sure they can fend for themselves one day.
She explained: “Because we’re there and my kids, who are like little Baldwins, don’t know simple things that never occurred to me, like how to load a dishwasher.
“Now, granted, they’re young, but I knew how to do that. And clean a floor, don’t make a big mess when you’re eating. All this stuff that I’m not used to having to do for them.
“I had to bring them back to my roots, where I met Alec, and being like, ‘Hey, you know what? You need to learn how to do things on your own so you don’t get stuck in something.
“Now it’s not their fault. They don’t have a choice. This is how they’ve been raised.
“So now we’re in a process of going back to that. And they know not to put all the cups right side up in a dishwasher.”
