Joan Grande has publicly praised her daughter following the singer’s announcement that she plans to reduce her public appearances after completing her current tour.
Ariana Grande has received public support from her mother Joan Grande after announcing plans to step back from the spotlight following months of intense scrutiny over her appearance during the promotion of her latest music.
The 33-year-old singer’s mum spoke out after her famous daughter shared a series of behind-the-scenes photographs from the filming of her Petal music video on Instagram, days after the release of her new album of the same name.
Ariana’s post came shortly after a spokesperson confirmed the Grammy-winning singer and actor intends to “take a step back from visibility” once her Eternal Sunshine tour concludes next month following what was described as “endless public scrutiny”.
The development also follows confirmation Ariana will no longer appear opposite Jonathan Bailey in next summer’s West End revival of Sunday in the Park with George.
The production team said it understood and supported her decision.
Ariana has remained one of the entertainment industry’s most prominent figures following the global success of Wicked, in which she starred as Glinda alongside Cynthia Erivo, under director Jon M. Chu. The film and its sequel, Wicked: For Good, have continued to dominate awards conversations and popular culture, while Ariana remains best known for her music career, including albums such as Thank U, Next, Sweetener and Eternal Sunshine, as well as her breakthrough role in Nickelodeon’s Victorious.
Joan Grande, 69, responded publicly to Ariana’s latest Instagram post.
Her mother said in response to her daughter’s new online clip: “You are magnificent… and this video is incredible!!
“I love it and I love you more!!!”
Ariana captioned the post with a lyric from the title track of Petal.
She wrote: “petal in the pavement …… (heart emoji.)”
The post featured a collection of photographs from the music video, including images of Ariana wearing a cow-print dress and heels, an off-the-shoulder black outfit and another costume covered in fake blood.
The release of the video prompted renewed discussion on social media about Ariana’s appearance.
A spokesperson for the singer subsequently confirmed she intends to reduce her public profile after completing her current tour.
The representative said: “She looks forward to finishing the tour and ending it on a high note, both healthily and happily, and then taking a much-deserved break from public-facing work and appearances, which has led to endless, ongoing public scrutiny.
“This tour has been a beautiful experience for her. She loves her fans and has loved every minute of this tour so much.”
People also confirmed Ariana will no longer appear in the West End production of Sunday in the Park with George alongside Jonathan.
The production team said it had “understanding and support” for Ariana’s decision while wishing her “nothing but the best”.
Although Ariana has not directly addressed the latest reaction online, her Instagram post attracted messages of support from fans, many of whom described the music video as “cinema” and a “work of art”.
Stylist Law Roach and the video’s director Christian Breslauer also responded to the post with red heart emojis.
Ariana has previously spoken publicly about body-shaming and the impact it has had on her wellbeing.
In a tearful interview in 2024, she described the criticism as “really dangerous” and said it was “hard to protect (her)self from that noise”.
She later shared the clip again on social media as what she described as “a loving reminder to all”.
