Matthew McConaughey hopes to live on through his children

Matthew McConaughey hopes his children hold on to some of the life lessons he has taught them.

Matthew McConaughey believes his children will help him become “immortal”.

The Rivals of Amziah King actor – who has Levi, 18, Vida, 16, and 13-year-old Livingston with wife Camila Alves – doesn’t want his kids to grow up and be “exactly” like him, but he hopes they are able to take on board some of the wisdom and life lessons he has imparted over the years.

He told People magazine: “Every parent out there, what do you want for your children? You want to pass on some values and things that you built in your own life.

“You don’t want them to be exactly like you, but you want them to take some things and keep them alive after you are gone. That’s how you become immortal.”

Matthew’s eldest son Levi made his acting debut alongside his famous dad last year in The Lost Bus, and the 57-year-old star recently shared the career advice he gave the teenagers.

Noting it often takes “troubadours and rebels” to be successful as an actor, Matthew urged his son to take risks and not be afraid of failure.

He told E! News: “You’ve got to be able to deal with rejection, that’s part of it. You’ve got to hopefully love doing it and love the process so much that enough ‘nos’ don’t matter. If not, it’s not for you, because I was taught there’s no ‘help wanted’ signs in Hollywood.

“I just try to push, to say, ‘It’s better to make a fool of yourself and find out,’ than to leave an audition and go, ‘Oh, I had that moment and I hesitated.’

“Make a fool of yourself. Fail more. Try and fail more. No one gives as much of a damn as you think they do.”

The Dallas Byers Club star and his wife haven’t pushed their kids to follow in his footsteps, but they will do their best to “open doors” to help their brood pursue their dreams.

He said: “I don’t know if it’s something he’s going to want to pursue as a career.

“But as we’ve done what we’ve always done, Camila and I will do our best to open doors and then after that it’s up to our kids to do what they do with it.

“[Levi has] obviously grown up around and on sets. Working on crews and making short films around the house and stuff like that.”
