Supermodel Carolyn Murphy urges youngsters to use sunscreen after spending so much money “correcting unnecessary sun damage”, and her daughter, Dylan Blue Schroeder, 25, returns the favour by advising her mother to drink “a gallon of water” and carry out her skincare routine.
Carolyn Murphy urges youngsters to use sunscreen after spending so much money “correcting unnecessary sun damage”.
The 53-year-old supermodel has a 25-year-old daughter, Dylan Blue Schroeder – who she shares with her ex-husband, businessman Jake Schroeder – and she will often advise her to use sun cream when out and about.
When asked what one piece of wisdom she would tell her younger self, or her daughter, she told Harper’s Bazaar magazine: “Use sunscreen! I’m serious here.
“The money I’ve spent correcting unnecessary sun damage is frustrating.
“Of all the profound wisdom I could pass along, apparently this is it: Wear the sunscreen.
Dylan also gives her mother regular advice, including to drink “a gallon of water” and to carry out her skincare routine.
She added: “My daughter reminds me daily to play and to drink a gallon of water, but she also makes sure I do every step of my skincare routine because, as she reminds me, those extra layers help create a healthy skin barrier.
“So apparently the wisdom goes both ways.”
Ultimately, Carolyn believes “real beauty comes from within”, and she thinks people should be kinder to themselves in life.
She added: “My perspective on beauty actually hasn’t changed that much. I believed from the beginning that real beauty comes from within; I just understand what that means more deeply now.
“It’s kindness, not only toward others but toward yourself.
“It’s self-care, self-love, self-worth, and learning to extend yourself some grace when those things feel harder to access. On those days, I ask myself what I would say to my daughter.
“We can be so much kinder to the people we love than we are to ourselves.”
Carolyn – who previously dated actor Will Arnett – turned 53 last month, and she feels able to laugh at herself “more” and she tries not to take everything “quite so seriously” nowadays.
Quizzed on what has surprised her about getting older, she said: “That it’s not so bad and it truly does get better!
“‘With age comes wisdom’ isn’t a cliché; you really do begin to understand yourself differently.”
