Actor Charlie Hunnam has revealed the idea for his new Sons of Anarchy TV show Legends came to him in a series of “dreams”.

The 46-year-old actor – who played Jax Teller in the show – has created and written spin-off series Legends which will reunite him with his Sons of Anarchy castmates including Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates and Theo Rossi, but they will all be playing fictionalised versions of themselves instead of the characters they portrayed in the show.
He told The Hollywood Reporter: “[It was] really born out of me having several dreams over a period of time about us all being back together.
“Obviously something in my subconscious was yearning for that experience – to have another creative process with that group of people that I loved. So I wrote something that would allow that to happen.”
Legends is based around the premise of the cast of Sons of Anarchy reuniting at a fan convention years after the series’ conclusion and they are thrown into a real life adventure together.
Charlie went on to insist the new show is definitely not an eighth series of Sons of Anarchy – as many of the characters including his own were killed off at the end of series seven.
He added: “All I can say is that it’s definitely not season eight of Sons of Anarchy. It’s the same group of actors, but we are all playing ourselves, going on a mad adventure, and coming together after 10 years apart, although maintaining deep friendship in that time.”
Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter is not involved with Legends but he has given the project his blessing.
In a post on Instagram, Sutter wrote: “I know the news about Charlie’s show hit today, and I’m beginning to get some queries about it.
“I just want to say my piece. I’m not involved with Legends at all – nor should I be. It has nothing to do with the characters I created, or the mythology.
“It’s really about the show and the legacy of the show, and, quite frankly, there are thousands of people who are responsible for that legacy.”
He added: “I just want folks to know that Charlie came to me when he was in the process of pitching this to the network to ask for my blessing, knowing that the IP would probably not be able to be invoked for various reasons of legalese stuff.
“I gave Charlie my full blessing. I wish nothing but the best for him in this project. My wife [star Katey Sagal] is in the project. I have nothing but love for [FX Networks chairman] John Landgraf and the folks at FX who have been so good to me, so generous. So it has my full-blown support.”
