WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio has revealed why he wouldn’t let his daughter start training to be a wrestler until last year.
Rey Mysterio banned his daughter from wrestling until she’d graduated.
The WWE Hall of Famer – whose son Dominik Mysterio is already a major star in his own right – has admitted while he has helped Aalyah, 25, take her first steps, he wanted to make sure she was taking the right approach.
He exclusively told BANG Showbiz: “She wanted to try it before when she was still in school, and that was my only reason why I didn’t let her.
“I said, ‘You show me a diploma, and when you graduate, we can. I’ll take you to the ring’, and sure enough, she graduated last year, UCSD, Human Biology.
“[I] saw her diploma, she goes, ‘Okay, Dad, now I’m ready to step in the ring.'”
The 51-year-old legend initially thought her foray into the family business would be “a one-time thing”, and he took her to WWE’s Performance Center in Orlando for a session in October 2025.
He recalled: “She enjoyed it. She goes, ‘That was fun. That was really cool’. So then I signed her up to go up for two weeks without her dad, on her own to do it 10 days back-to-back.
“Sleeping, waking up, doing it, coming back home, sleeping, waking up, that same routine, and she really enjoyed it.”
From there, Aalyah has decided to wants to “pursue” wrestling, and her father has encouraged her dream.
He explained: “I said, ‘You can always go back to school at any time, whenever you want, if this is really what you want to do, door’s right there. You just got to put in the work’. And she understands that.”
Rey described Aalyah as a “fast learner”, and compared her to his son Dominik.
He said: “He picked up very fast on things. I think with Dom, he started picking up things much faster when he was already in the ring and learning.
“Maybe it was a little bit more difficult at the beginning, the process, but now it’s like he he’s on top of little things, and I noticed that even when we were tagging together. And Aalyah has that that gift too.”
The masked legend is surprised his daughter is so “passionate” about wrestling, but he’s excited to see where she goes from here.
He added: “She’s training, she’s just kicking butt, trying to trying to make a name for herself and honour both of our names, her brother’s and her dad’s.”
Rey and Dominik will both be in action this weekend at WWE’s AAA TripleMania shows.
On Friday (11.09.26), Rey will face the 7 foot 3 giant Omos, and on Sunday (13.09.26), Dominik defends his Mega Championship against El Grande Americano.
Of this weekend’s events, he raved: “It’s insane. So if you’ve always heard about lucha libre and you’ve never seen it before, this is your time to just log on and check this out because this style is crazy.
“I thought I was crazy. No, this generation is much crazier, and I really get a kick watching something that I was able to create, and now they just turned up the level 100 times, which is really insane, man.”
Triplemanía 34 airs live on WWE’s YouTube Channel this Friday from Las Vegas and Sunday from Mexico City.
